In celebration of Rotary International’s Maternal and Child Health Month and the International Breastfeeding Week, the Rotary Club of Alakuko, under Rotary District 9111 Nigeria, has donated durable wooden benches and essential hygiene items to the Abule Titun Primary Health Centre in Alakuko, Lagos State.
The donation, which includes iron-reinforced benches, sanitary pads, washing detergents, and packs of FanYogo drinking yoghurt, is aimed at improving the comfort and well-being of nursing mothers who rely on the facility for postnatal care and child health services.
Speaking at the event, Club President Rtn. Oludare Oyegbola emphasized the importance of creating safe and supportive environments for mothers. “We observed that the plastic chairs at the center were no longer durable. These new benches will provide comfort and dignity for mothers as they breastfeed and care for their children,” he said.
He noted that maternal and child health is one of Rotary International’s core focus areas with the month of July dedicated for this purpose, and the club remains committed to supporting vulnerable populations through strategic interventions.
Immediate Past President Rtn. Idowu Makinde praised the swift execution of the project, describing it as “an applaudable gesture” and commended the Lagos State Government for its ongoing efforts to strengthen primary healthcare infrastructure.
President-Elect Rtn. Saheed Olaogun encouraged hospital staff and beneficiaries to maintain the donated items and pledged continued support for healthcare centers in the community.
Receiving the donations, the hospital’s Matron Mrs. Bosede Oladipupo expressed gratitude to the Rotary Club for its consistent support. She emphasized the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a child’s life, describing it as vital for optimal growth and development.
“Mothers should understand that exclusive breastfeeding is not just a health recommendation—it’s a foundation for a healthier future,” she said.
Representing the mothers, Mrs. Morenike thanked the Rotary Club and called on government at all levels to further equip healthcare facilities with modern resources to ease access to quality care without financial hardship.
