The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, has appealed to stakeholders in the transport sector to rededicate their efforts towards improving Safety and Traffic Management on Lagos roads.
Dr. Oladeinde made the appeal at the Y2021 Driving School Instructors and Operators’ ‘Train-The-Trainers’ programme organised by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute with the theme “Qualitative Drivers’ Education: Panacea to Economic Growth and Development”.
He envisaged that the training would enhance government’s plan to achieve sanity and improved traffic management on Lagos roads while reducing productive hours lost to traffic gridlocks and unwholesome road culture among the motoring public.
Maintaining that building the dream transportation sector is a task that requires the support, collaboration and cooperation of all the stakeholders, the Commissioner gave an assurance that the State Government will continue to formulate and implement programmes and policies beneficial to stakeholders in the transport sector.
Earlier in her welcome address, the General Manager of the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu, noted that refresher training for the instructors of first-line drivers is essential to reduce road crashes that cause injuries and loss of man-hours in traffic.
She pointed out that many of these crashes are caused by human error and a lack of formal training, adding that other contributory factors include inadequate knowledge of traffic rules and regulations as well as lack of vehicle maintenance.
In his own presentation, the Director, Transport Operations, Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Abdul-Hafeez Toriola, described defensive driving as driving to save lives, money and time regardless of the circumstances and actions of others, hence the need for drivers to inculcate techniques to further promote safety, sanity and security of lives and property on the roads.
In his goodwill message, the Sector Commander, Lagos State Sector Command, Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC), Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemigbe, represented by Mr. Godwin Ewele, commended the Institute for organising the programme, noting that those who do not attend a proper driving school pass down the same mistake and ignorance in driving techniques to others.
He added that driving goes beyond knowing how to drive but being mastery and speaking the same language with the vehicle being driven so as to reduce the frequency of fatalities on our roads.
Similarly, the Acting General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Mr. Bolaji Oreagba, represented by Mr. Saka Onabanjo, said that a society devoid of traffic jams, road indiscipline and bad road culture will experience rapid economic development.
He urged the driving school instructors to equip themselves more by going for further training and conduct more research in their areas of specialisation in order to train the first-line drivers for more discipline on roads.
