ENDSARS PROTEST: SOMOLU LG CHAIRMAN ‘DULLAR’ APPALUDS SANWO-OLU

condemns police brutality in Nigeria urges protesters to listen to the government 

Following the continued protest against Nigerian Police tactical team, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and Police brutality, the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Governemnt, Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu has joined his voice in condemning the police brutality and inhumane treatment in Nigeria. 

The Executive Chairman also applaud Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for inaugurating an 8-man Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution which will receive and investigate complaints of police brutality in Lagos. 

Speaking after a virtual (online) meeting of Conference57 Chairmen with the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Executive Chairman made it known that he applauds the swift intervention of the Governor from the onset by addressing the protesters at Lekki toll gate on October 12th and Lagos State House of Assembly Alausa on October 13th. 

According to Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu, the discussions between the Governor and the protesters are immediately converted to executive action by the Governor as the five demands stated by the protesters are now met by Lagos State Government. 

The Council helmsman said the protesters meant well for Nigeria and Nigerians but as hoodlums are taking advantage of absence of security personnel in some areas to attack and inflict pains on citizens and law enforcement agencies, is an issue of great concern to the government. He said despite the peaceful protests in some areas, many people are in pain and some had died as they can’t access their livelihood and medical services. 

 

Hon.Abdul Hamed Salawu has called on the youths to trust the Governor’s leadership intervention in ending Police brutality in Nigeria and disbandment of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). He said the Rtd Justice Doris Okuwobi led panel with notable human rights lawyer like Mr. Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, Mrs. Olutoyin Odusanya, Ms. Patience Udoh and two youth representatives and a member of the National Human Rights Commission. The Governor, earlier last week had flew to Abuja to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari and Inspection General of Police, Mohammed Adamu on the nationwide #ENDSARS protest. 

After inaugurating the 8-man Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution, the Governor said “In Lagos, beyond setting up this panel which we hope will serve as a representation of our broader interests, we have established a N200 million fund for compensation to families and individuals who have been victimized by officers of the disbanded SARS”. However, the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu, urged the youths to embrace the dialogue as opened by Lagos State Government as that is the only thing that will distinguish between the peaceful protesters from the hoodlums who had hijacked the protest in some areas, causing pain and danger on residents and road users. 

Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman warned youths in his community to adhere to the 24 hours curfew directive by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu from 4pm of Tuesday, October 20, 2020. The curfew is imposed to check the hoodlums who are using the opportunity of the peaceful protest to disrupt the peace of the state.
