The Rotary Club of Alakuko has made a significant contribution to maternal and child health in Ojokoro with the donation of medical equipment and gift items to the Ilo-Ajegunle Primary Healthcare Centre in Ajegunle, Alakuko, Lagos.
The donation and presentation ceremony was held on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at the Ajegunle-Ilo Primary Healthcare Centre. The event, organized under the Rotary Maternal and Child Health Project, was attended by members of the Rotary Club, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and key health officials in the community.
Present at the event were: Chairman, Ward Health Committee, Ajegunle-Ilo Primary Healthcare Centre, Alakuko Ajegunle, Moradeyo Ezekiel; Apex Nurse, Ojokoro LCDA, Nurse Olamilokun Rebecca; Impact President, Rotary Club of Alakuko, Saheed Olaogun; one of the beneficiaries, Mrs Olafumiyo Adeola, and other nursing mothers; Medical Officer of Health, Ojokoro LCDA, Dr. Iyanda Fadeelat; and Officer in Charge of Ilo-Ajegunle Primary Health Centre, Sejoro Victoria, among other stakeholders and community members.
They were joined by the full complement of the centre’s medical staff and members of the Alakuko Community Health Committee.
The Rotary Club of Alakuko, led by its President, Rtn. Com. Saheed Olaogun, donated several medical equipment to the facility. Items presented included a breastfeeding bench, thermometer, sphygmomanometer, stainless steel chairs, and gift packs for expectant mothers and nursing mothers.
Speaking at the event, President Olaogun said the donation was part of Rotary’s commitment to improving healthcare access, especially for women and children at the grassroots level. He noted that maternal and child health remains a key focus area for Rotary International, and the club decided to intervene at Ilo-Ajegunle PHC to support both health workers and patients.
As part of activities for the day, the attending women were offered health talks and lectures on early child care for newborn babies. Health professionals at the centre educated mothers on breastfeeding techniques, immunization schedules, hygiene practices, and signs to watch out for in newborns.
Following the lectures, the Rotary President presented gift items to all the women in attendance. Beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the gesture, saying the support would go a long way in easing the challenges faced by expectant and nursing mothers who patronize the facility.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Olafumiyo Adeola, thanked the Rotary Club of Alakuko for remembering mothers in the community. She said the breastfeeding bench and other equipment donated would improve comfort and service delivery at the centre.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Ward Health Committee, Moradeyo Ezekiel, commended Rotary for the intervention and urged other organizations and well-meaning individuals to emulate the club’s example. He said partnerships like this are crucial to strengthening primary healthcare delivery in Ojokoro LCDA.
The Apex Nurse, Ojokoro LCDA, Nurse Olamilokun Rebecca, lauded the quality of the donated items and assured that they would be properly maintained and used for the benefit of patients. She emphasized the importance of regular support to primary healthcare centres, which serve as the first point of contact for many families.
In her remarks, the Officer in Charge of Ilo-Ajegunle PHC, Mrs. Sejoro Victoria, appreciated Rotary Club of Alakuko for choosing the facility for the project. She said the breastfeeding bench would provide a conducive space for nursing mothers, while the thermometer and sphygmomanometer would enhance antenatal and postnatal care.
Dr. Iyanda Fadeelat, Medical Officer of Health, Ojokoro LCDA, described the donation as timely and impactful. She said the LCDA remains committed to working with partners like Rotary to reduce maternal and infant mortality and improve health outcomes in the area.
The event ended with a group photograph and inspection of the donated items by Rotary members and health officials.
With this intervention, the Rotary Club of Alakuko has demonstrated how community service can directly impact lives. By equipping Ilo-Ajegunle Primary Healthcare Centre and supporting mothers with essential gifts, the club has reinforced its role in promoting health, goodwill, and service to humanity in Alakuko and environs.
