The Lagos State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has disowned claims by Mr. Aaron Akerejola, who has allegedly been parading himself as the Acting Chairman of the association, describing the assertion as false and misleading.
In a public notice issued on April 27, 2026, and jointly signed by Chairman Olatutu Oladunni and Secretary Comrade Bello Omotunde, the association made it clear that Akerejola holds no position within SWAN Lagos and has not been authorized to represent the body in any capacity.
The leadership emphasized that the notion of an “Acting Chairman” does not exist within its current structure, noting that there is no vacancy in the office. Oladunni, it stated, remains the duly elected Chairman of the Lagos chapter.
According to the statement, Oladunni was re-elected for a second three-year term during the October 2025 elections conducted by the SWAN Electoral Committee (SWANECO), a process the association described as free, fair, and transparent.
“The Association categorically states that Mr. Aaron Akerejola is not the Acting Chairman of SWAN Lagos State Chapter. Any claim to that effect is false, misleading, and without the authority or approval of the Association,” the statement read.
SWAN Lagos also cautioned the public, including corporate bodies, government institutions, and stakeholders in the sports and media sectors, against engaging in any official business with Akerejola or any unauthorized individual claiming to represent the association.
It further stressed that it would not be held accountable for any agreements or transactions carried out by such persons, warning that dealings with unauthorized representatives could expose parties to fraud and legal risks.
Observers in the sports journalism community note that such clarifications are vital in maintaining order and credibility within professional bodies, as conflicting leadership claims can erode trust and disrupt operations.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, SWAN Lagos urged stakeholders to verify all official communications through its recognized channels. It also called on members to remain vigilant and aligned with the legitimate leadership.
The association concluded that only directives and communications from the Oladunni-led executive council are valid, while seeking continued support from partners in promoting professionalism in sports journalism across Lagos State.
