The Controller General of Customs, CGC Adewale Adeniyi, has commissioned the Wale Adeniyi Sports Arena (WASA) in Lagos, a Corporate Social Responsibility project by the Western Marine Command. The facility aims to provide alternatives to crime, restiveness, and drug abuse for youths.
The Controller General was welcomed by the Controller Western Marine,Controller Patrick Ntadi and other stakeholders in the Maritime Sector.
Customs Controller General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi while declaring the facility open said,the arena has been provided for officers and men of the Western Marine Command to help them maintain physical and mental fitness, which is crucial due to the demanding nature of their jobs.
The CGC emphasizes the importance of officers staying fit and encourages them to utilize the new facilities, citing his own commitment to physical activity. Adewale Adeniyi also acknowledged past issues with community members but expresses happiness about improved rapprochement and understanding, which has enabled the implementation of the project by the Command.
The Controller Western Marine,Controller Patrick Ntadi in his welcome address said the Arena is dedicated to honour the Controller General,Wale Adeniyi who was the former public relations officer of the Nigeria Customs Service,he described the CGC as a man of uncommon diligence, professionalism, and dedication to duty and his approach was very grass rooted.
Ntadi also said the Sport Arena is a practical expression of their belief that security is not only about enforcement, patrols,and interceptions,it is also about prevention and giving to the youths alternatives to crime,restiveness,drug abuse and other social vices, as when they provide safe and positive spaces for recreation,mentorship,and healthy competition, and investing in peace,stability, and the future of their communities,Ntadi said.
Controller Patrick Ntadi went further that the Sport Arena is aimed at taking youths off the streets and into constructive engagement, he said Sports teach discipline, teamwork,leadership,resilience, and respect for rules the same values that guide them as officers of the Nigeria Customs Service,by the creation of the Arena they are opening doors of opportunity for young people to discover their talents,channel their energy productively and build hope for better tomorrow.
The facility was later declared open by the CGC and other stakeholders in the Marine industry.
