Prof. Joash Amupitan, National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), affirmed the commission’s determination to deliver a 2027 general election that is free, fair, credible and transparent. Speaking at the Induction and Strategic Retreat for senior commission officials in Lagos, Amupitan described the retreat as a bridge between institutional experience and the innovative demands of a rapidly changing electoral landscape.
He said the event offered a rare opportunity to share knowledge, align strategies and strengthen the leadership echelon as INEC prepares for the 2027 polls. Addressing long‑standing logistical and personnel challenges that have plagued past elections, the chairman announced that a dedicated Election Management Body will be established to resolve these issues.
“The 2027 General Election must be a watershed moment in Nigeria’s history,” Amupitan declared. “We aim to build an institution that is globally recognised – a beacon of integrity, a model of technological efficiency and a fortress of democratic values. Under our watch, INEC will become the best election‑management body in Africa.”
He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to staff welfare, promising modern tools, a conducive work environment and zero tolerance for misconduct. “Any compromise on our values or processes will have consequences,” he warned.
Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner Prof. Ayobami Salami, in his welcome address, noted that the retreat marks a significant milestone in the commission’s continuous evolution, providing a platform for reflection, strategic alignment and institutional consolidation.
The retreat underscores INEC’s resolve to rewrite Nigeria’s electoral narrative and set a new standard for democratic processes across the continent.
