The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, has celebrated media professionals and public office holders who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields.
The honours were conferred during the NUJ Lagos State 2025 Press Week Gala and Awards Night on Friday in Ikeja, Lagos.
Chairman of the NUJ Lagos State Council, Mr. Adeleye Ajayi, warmly set the tone for the evening with his welcome address.
“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, esteemed colleagues, award recipients, invited guests, friends of the media, and all partners in progress, good evening.
“It is with immense joy and a deep sense of responsibility that I welcome you all to the 2025 Press Week Gala/Awards Night of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Lagos State Council.
“This annual gathering remains one of the most anticipated events in our calendar. A night dedicated to celebrating excellence, professionalism, and the resilient spirit of Nigerian journalists.
“Press Week is a moment of reflection, renewal, and rededication. Over the past days, we have engaged in meaningful discussions, reaffirming the values that guide our noble profession.
“Tonight, we gather not only to unwind and celebrate, but also to take stock of our collective journey as custodians of public trust.
“As journalists, our calling comes with enormous responsibility. In a world increasingly shaped by misinformation, divisive narratives, and the pressures of digital speed, I urge every media professional here to recommit to the ideals of accuracy, fairness, balance, and ethical reporting.
“Our role is vital to national development, social stability, and democratic growth. The stories we tell shape the nation, influence policies, and mould public opinion. We must, therefore, uphold the highest standards every single day.
“In the same spirit, I call on political appointees and public office holders to deepen their contributions to good governance. Nigeria’s progress depends not only on those who report the news, but also on those who make decisions that affect daily life. We urge our leaders to demonstrate transparency, accountability, and commitment to the people they serve.
“Public governance is a shared responsibility, and political appointees must show exemplary leadership, openness to media scrutiny, and readiness to engage constructively with journalists.
“Tonight is also a night of honour. To our distinguished award recipients, I extend my warmest congratulations. Your hard work, courage, and professionalism have set you apart. The awards you receive tonight are not just plaques, they are symbols of excellence, resilience, and integrity,” he said.
The Chairman’s remarks were followed by goodwill messages from notable personalities, including the National Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Hajiya Aisha Burra, ably represented by Doris Olumoko; Dr. Babajide Johnson, Director of Special Programmes at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ); Mr. Adesegun Ogundeji, Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Information and Strategy; Mr. Samuel Dada, National Financial Secretary, NUJ; and Dr. Yinka Adagun, former General Manager, Lagos Traffic Radio.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of Awards of Excellence to outstanding personalities.
Mr. Olusina Thorpe, former Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Information and Strategy, was honoured for his exceptional contributions to the NUJ. Responding, Mr Thorpe reaffirmed his position to continually support NUJ.
"I admit that NUJ has further challenged me to do more, and I can assure you that I will never disappoint you because I know I am up to the task."
Mr. Lanre Bajulaiye, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Information and Strategy also received an Award of Excellence for his significant support to the Union. Reacting to the award, Mr. Bajulaiye described it as reward forhard work.
"I feel happy to be in our midst tonight. Whatever you know how to do, do it well because you dont know who is watching.
"The spirit of excellence should be upon us. As such, i urge you to continue to work hard so that you can also be celebrated when the time is ripe."
Dr. (Mrs.) Abimbola Oyetunde, Deputy President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, was celebrated for her dedicated service to the NUJ.
"I want to commend NUJ Lagos State Council for this honour, and I pledge my firm support for this Council because this is my home". She also reiterated the NUJ’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of journalists nationwide, and vowed that the Union would continue to resist any form of harassment against journalists while performing their constitutional duties.
Other award recipients included Mr. Olatunji Bello, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and Mr. Idris Aregbe, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts, and Culture.
Mr. Wale Akodu, Chairman of the NUJ Lagos Press Week Committee, expressed his gratitude to attendees and extended special appreciation to Dangote Group and Lotus Bank for their generous sponsorship.
