Most Reverend Dr Isaac Ayobami Olawuyi, Archbishop of Lagos, Methodist Church Nigeria, urged Nigerians to embrace the spirit of sacrifice this Christmas and to demand that the government deliver the “dividend of democracy” to all citizens.
Speaking to journalists at the church headquarters on Lagos Island on December 25, 2025, Archbishop Olawuyi said, “Jesus Christ had the power to gather all the materials of the world, but He emptied Himself and obeyed the will of His Father for humanity. That ultimate sacrifice is what we must emulate – we must make sacrifices for our nation, for our communities, and for those who are less fortunate.”
He called on the wealthy and those in authority to follow Christ’s example of service, urging them to help the poor, lower the cost of living, and ensure that “this country belongs to all of us.” He praised the government’s efforts so far but warned, “They should not rest on their oars. The danger is too great; we must do our very best to keep the nation safe at all times.”
Reflecting on the significance of Christmas, the Archbishop highlighted the humility of Christ’s birth in a manger and the lessons of simplicity, humility, and love. He encouraged national leaders to draw from these lessons to drive development and unity in Nigeria.
The Archbishop concluded with gratitude, saying, “Despite the fears here and there, thank God, God is in control and He is in charge.”
