Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, CON, mni, recently declared open the 2025 Defence Training Conference with a strong appeal for a transformational approach to military training, emphasizing the need for a performance-oriented and technologically-driven Armed Forces.
Speaking at the Armed Forces Officers’ Mess in Asokoro, Abuja, the Minister, according to a statement signed by Mati Ali, the Personal Assistant (PA) on Media and Publicity to the Defence Minister, stressed that Nigeria’s security environment has become more complex and unpredictable, requiring a departure from conventional training methods. He noted that contemporary threats are no longer confined to traditional battlefields, but now extend into cyberspace, urban centers, and even borderless conflict zones.
“We are no longer fighting yesterday’s wars,” Badaru asserted. “The threats we face today are asymmetric, borderless, and technologically advanced. Our training must reflect this new reality.”
He emphasized that the evolving nature of warfare now demands a new generation of military personnel who are adaptable, technologically savvy, and strategically prepared for a wide range of operational scenarios. The Minister outlined the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that the Armed Forces remain mission-focused and ready for both domestic and international challenges.
Drawing attention to the importance of leadership development and personnel welfare, Badaru stressed that building psychological resilience and enhancing the capacity of officers and men across all service branches remain top government priorities.
The conference, with the theme “Performance-Oriented Training and Trends in the Contemporary Operating Environment,” brought together senior military officers, policymakers, defence experts, and international partners to deliberate on emerging trends in defence training and how best to align Nigeria’s Armed Forces with global standards.
Badaru urged participants to move beyond theory and focus on practical, actionable strategies that will improve operational efficiency. He challenged them to explore innovative training methods, embrace simulation technology, and foster stronger civil-military cooperation in support of national development.
Commending the Defence Headquarters for convening the conference, the Minister lauded the Armed Forces for their dedication to national service and professionalism in the face of diverse security threats.
He concluded with a firm call for the outcomes of the conference to directly influence policy, training standards, and operational readiness across all military formations.
The 2025 Defence Training Conference is seen as a milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its defence posture and build a more agile and technologically capable military force.
