City vs Wolves: Real Test or False Form?

Man City’s chase for a Champions League spot continues today when they welcome Wolves to the Etihad. It’s a clash between a side desperate to lock in a top-five finish and one riding a six-game winning streak, though the story beneath the surface tells a different tale.

City are fourth on the Premier League table with just a single point separating them from fifth-placed Chelsea. With only three games left, the margin for error is slim. This season has been anything but smooth for Pep Guardiola’s men. Injuries to key players like Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, and Ruben Dias have disrupted their rhythm at various points, and while they recently beat an in-form Aston Villa 2–0 as broadcast on GOtv, consistency has been hard to come by.

Wolves, on paper, look dangerous. Six straight wins have pushed them into the top half of the table, but their run has come against struggling sides. Three of their wins were against already-relegated clubs, while the other three were against teams sitting below them on the table, including an out-of-sorts Manchester United and Tottenham. In other words, they’ve yet to prove themselves against a truly top side in this run.

Manchester City also hold the recent advantage in this fixture. The reigning champions have beaten Wolves in each of their last five meetings, often doing so comfortably. So while Wolves arrive in form, City won’t be short on confidence either.

The game kicks off at 20:00 on GOtv Channel 66, and provides City with the chance to keep their top-five fate in their own hands and climb even higher if other results go their way. For Wolves, it’s a shot at legitimacy. Are they on a real run, or has their form been flattered by easy fixtures?
