… As Old Students Sponsor Prize-Giving Day for Students, Teachers
The Lagos State Education District I has declared zero tolerance to bullying among students across the District, assuring that it will continue to partner with parents and other relevant stakeholders to disabuse the minds of students from engaging in the dastardly act.
The Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary, Education District I, Mrs. Titilayo Solarin, made the declaration recently at the Government Senior College, Agege, during the year 2020/2021 academic session prize-giving day sponsored by the 1980 set of the school.
Speaking on the theme of the event: “Bullying, A Serious Distraction To Academic Excellence”, Solarin said although the District has not recorded any incident of bullying among the students, the leadership of the School will continue to sensitise the students on the negative impacts in order to sustainably dissuade them from engaging in the act.
Her words: “In Lagos State, there is zero-tolerance to bullying. Also, in all schools under our district, during assembly every morning, we have talks to sensitise our students against bullying and I am happy to say that we have not witnessed any form of bullying. And we are not going to, because our counsellors are doing a lot to ensure that we have zero-tolerance for bullying”.
She assured parents that the school management will continue to be vigilant and stay on the lookout for any traces of bullying, just as she also challenged them to do likewise.
The Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary described the prize-giving event as remarkable, noting that it was designed to motivate both the teachers and students to do more as they are all being honoured at the occasion.
“This is the first time we are witnessing something like this, where an old set will sponsor a programme of this magnitude and it is worthy of emulation. I say a big thank you to you all and God bless you”, she added.
Mrs. Solarin called on other old student associations in different schools to give back to their Alma Mater, while urging the 1980 set of the school to continue in their good deeds.
She implored the school workers not to relent in their efforts but continue to contribute to the excellent performance of the students, commending them for sacrificing to ensure that the students perform well in their academics as evident in the last WASSCE result.
To the students, Solarin urged them to put in more effort so that they will continue to perform excellently well in their studies, saying “The students that did not receive prizes today should put in more efforts and ensure they do well to be recognised next year”.
The Principal of Government Senior College Agege, Mrs. Bolanle Olusola Alamu, said the prize-giving day was initiated to motivate the students to work harder.
She also thanked the State government for the various infrastructures put in place, the Commissioner for Education and the TG/PS for facilitating different projects in the school, the 1980 set as well as the teaching and non-teaching staff of the school for their positive contributions.
Chairman of the Prize-Giving Day Committee, Mr. Kehinde Amoo Adeleke, said the event was held to promote hard work, restore academic integrity and maintain excellence in the students.
He applauded the efforts of the school management towards ensuring continued academic excellence, saying: “Government Senior College, Agege has continued to produce students who did not only excel academically but have become notable personalities and achievers in their various fields of endeavour.
A retired Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Ministry of Education and 1980 old student set of the school, Mrs. Abosede Adelaja, said the event was to motivate and encourage teachers and students, who have achieved a lot in the previous year, while decrying the different dimensions that bullying has taken in recent times.
