The Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) has trained NURTW members on strategies to avoid frequent road crashes on Lagos roads, just as it called on professional drivers to voluntarily comply with the State Government’s directives by coming to the Institute for their yearly mandatory recertification training.
The General Manager of the Institute, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu, disclosed this at a Training/Public Enlightenment and Advocacy Campaign for Professional Drivers under the umbrella of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Iyana-Ipaja Branch, on Tuesday.
She explained that part of the strategies to avoid crashes and ensure compliance with the law include regular maintenance of the vehicle, securing and updating vehicle particulars as well as obeying traffic rules and regulations, adding that the drivers must also attend the mandatory yearly training at the Institute in a bid to hone and update their skills as professionals.
Tiamiyu said once drivers have complied with the listed strategies, it will be difficult to get distracted or afraid of traffic management personnel doing periodic checks of vehicle documents on Lagos roads.
Her words: “The role of transportation in economic development is germane to building the Lagos of our dream, and we want to implore you to continually contribute your quota by obeying the transportation rules and regulations as laid down in theSstate and also, come for your yearly mandatory training to update your driving skills”.
Also speaking at the event, the General Manager of Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), Mrs. Lape Kilanko, represented by Mrs. Abimbola Vincent, MVAA's Station Manager in Abekoko, Iyana-Ipaja, explained that contrary to the general belief that the Government is only interested in income generation, through vehicle registration, the purpose of motor vehicle registration is to establish a link between a vehicle and its owner in order to enable easy recovery and detection in an unforeseen case of crime.
Speaking in a similar vein, the Director of Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Engineer Akin-George Fashola, advised participants to keep vehicles that are not in proper working condition off the roads to ensure the safety of commuters.
Fashola, who was represented at the event by Engineer Adebiyi Akinsanya, therefore, implored professional drivers to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy to avoid unnecessary impediments on the road.
While responding, the Vice-Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Iyana-Ipaja Branch, Mr. Semiu Adekoya, appreciated LASDRI for bringing the training to them and saving them the stress of coming to the Institute. He pledged that all the participants will comply and put to good use all they have learnt at the event.
