LAGOS SPORTS FAMILY MOURNS JAKANDE, APPLAUDS HIM FOR REBUILDING ONIKAN STADIUM

The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has joined the good people of Lagos and others to mourn the demise of Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the First Executive Governor of the State, who died last Thursday, 11th February, 2021, at the age of 91 and has since been buried according to Islamic rites.

In a statement issued by the Commission, the Executive Chairman of LSSC, Mr. Sola Aiyepeku, commiserated with the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the family of the late Alhaji Jakande and the people of Lagos State for the loss, adding that the deceased left a void which would be hard to fill.

According to him, Jakande would be remembered as the Governor whose achievements in Office are still visibly seen today, several years after he had left office, stressing that his administration touched different facets of human life in Lagos State, including Sports.

The Chairman submitted that one of the notable achievements of the late Jakande in Sports in the State was the rebuilding and remodelling of the then Lagos City Stadium, renaming it as the Onikan Stadium, when it was re-opened on 2nd October, 1982”.

Aiyepeku said, "The Onikan Stadium, now Mobolaji Johnson Sports Arena, which was built by the administration of the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande has been an edifice the Lagos Sports family is very proud of. We cannot but commend and thank him for doing this for Sports in Lagos State”.

“The Onikan Stadium was bestowed on Lagos Sports and we are living witnesses of how important and useful the stadium has been for us in Lagos", he added.
