The Lagos Mainland Local Government on Friday 9th October 2026 held its 2026 Spelling Bee Competition, bringing together over 20 primary schools and seven secondary schools to compete for honours and promote academic excellence.
The competition, held at the council secretariat, saw pupils and students battle for top prizes in both primary and secondary categories.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Mayor Emilagba Kolawole Jubril, said the initiative was designed to bring together young minds and showcase their talents.
"Today is not just about spelling words correctly, it is about building confidence, sharpening intellect and nurturing the leaders of tomorrow. Every word these students spell today represents a step towards greater knowledge, greater confidence and a brighter future," he said.
Mayor Jubril also highlighted his administration's interventions in the education sector.
"In line with this commitment, our administration has embarked on the rehabilitation of UNA Primary School and Kadara Primary School, creating a more conducive learning environment for our children. We have also supported students through the distribution of free GCE and JAMB forms, helping to reduce the financial burden on families and ensuring that no deserving child is denied the opportunity to pursue further education because of financial constraints," he stated.
He added: "Through our Back-to-School initiative, we provided students with free school bags and essential stationery, because we understand that sometimes what appears small to us can make a significant difference in the life of a child. Today's Spelling Bee is another demonstration of our determination to discover, encourage and celebrate academic excellence among our young people."
Also speaking, the Supervisor for Education, Hon. Oluseye Olofin, said the competition was designed to bring together pupils and students across the council to showcase their academic prowess.
"Education is the bedrock of any successful nation. Our Chairman, Hon. Mayor Emilagba Kolawole Jubril, has been doing a lot to ensure that pupils in both primary and secondary schools have access to quality classrooms and quality infrastructure, through the distribution of exercise books, learning materials, summer coaching, and free GCE and UTME forms," he said.
Olofin noted that since assuming office, this was his first edition of the competition, adding that the turnout was impressive and that efforts would be made to improve next year's edition to better prepare pupils for the state-level contest.
At the end of the primary school category, Francis Oganna of Ijero Baptist Primary School emerged first, Chidinma Ndubisi of UNA Christ Church, Odunfa, came second, while Abdulmuiz Oshinlaja of Lagos Mainland Primary School, Ijero, took third place.
In the secondary school category, Mary Nwooga of Nawair Ud Deen Senior High School emerged winner, Israel Otuma of Ayetoro Senior Grammar School came second, while Janet Ogbonna of Ilogbo Junior High School came third.
