The Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Mayor Jubril Kolawole Emilagba, on Saturday, September 26, 2026, led the monitoring of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Otto community, where residents recorded improved turnout and compliance.
The exercise was also monitored by the Lagos State Government delegation led by the Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, alongside the Body of Permanent Secretaries.
The state monitoring team expressed satisfaction with the level of participation, noting that compliance has continued to improve since the initiative started six months ago.
Speaking during the exercise, Mr. Agoro said the monthly sanitation is gaining acceptance across communities in the state.
"This is the sixth edition we are doing and the turnout is getting better. It could be a lot better because we are supposed to just monitor. What we had in the past three months is that people are reactionary, they wait for us to come. What we want to see is that by the time we come, people should already be outside cleaning," he said.
Agoro commended Mayor Emilagba for his passion and commitment to environmental cleanliness, describing him as grounded and proactive.
He stressed that the monthly exercise has come to stay.
"This has come to stay. It is not something government will do for a while and get tired. Cleanliness starts with you. It is not government that will come inside your house to clean. You have to clean first," he said.
He urged residents to make environmental cleanliness a daily habit rather than a monthly routine to prevent diseases and promote healthy living.
"Cleanliness is next to godliness. When your environment is clean, there is no sickness. Health starts with a healthy environment," he added.
He also appealed to residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages, noting that such acts block water channels and cause flooding, especially in areas where road construction is ongoing.
On his part, Mayor Emilagba commended residents of Otto community for their impressive turnout.
"Today is impressive. I'm happy with what I saw and I appeal to our people that they should continue the way they did today, inside and outside their environment," the Chairman said.
He noted that the improved participation shows that advocacy on environmental cleanliness is yielding results, and urged residents to sustain the tempo.
Emilagba reiterated that cleanliness is a collective responsibility and called on households, traders and community leaders to make sanitation a daily culture.
He assured residents that his administration remains committed to promoting a cleaner, healthier and safer Lagos Mainland through continuous environmental sensitization and community engagement.
The exercise was monitored across various streets in Otto, with residents seen clearing drainages, sweeping streets and properly disposing of waste.
