The Executive Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Mayor Jubril Emilagba Kolawole, has said his administration delivered in one year what previous governments could not achieve in eight years through what he described as a “capture agenda” for development.
Speaking during a media briefing to mark his first year in office, the Chairman explained that “capture” does not mean force, but a deliberate and rapid delivery of the dividends of democracy to residents.
“Within one year, we demolished the dilapidated Odalakin Police Post and reconstructed a new one within 100 days. It was commissioned by the then Commissioner of Police, now AIG Zone 2, and has since been upgraded to a full Police Station and taken over by the IGP’s IRT team from Abuja,” he said.
Infrastructure and Security
Mayor Emilagba listed major road projects completed and ongoing, including:
1. Glover Street – Jebba Street – Tapa – Okobaba to the Shore: commissioned two months ago
2. Oroku Road: scheduled for commissioning early next month
He added that over 410 solar-powered streetlights have been installed across black spots in the council area, including Progressive Estate, Apapa Road, Abule Nla, Jubril Martins, Funsho Williams, Freeman Street, Willoughby, Denton, Ibadan Street, Glover, Carter and Simpson.
To strengthen security, the council distributed 7 mini-buses to the Police and local security outfits. An additional 18 mini-buses were later distributed to youths across Lagos Mainland.
Health, Education and Empowerment
On health, the Chairman said the council facilitated 29 hernia surgeries in the first three months and 7 more surgeries last month, including two critical cases handled by private doctors. Eye surgeries were also conducted, and beneficiaries were celebrated publicly during the 1-year anniversary.
In education, the administration distributed 500 WAEC forms and 750 JAMB forms last year, printed over 100 thousand exercise books for all 27 primary schools, and donated food items. Public schools and markets are fumigated quarterly for safety.
The council also runs a monthly “Ounje Emi” food distribution program, now in its 10th edition. During Ramadan and Lent, food items were distributed to mosques and churches. Within the first two months in office, ICT training was organized for public school teachers.
Traders also received cash support during road commissioning to boost their businesses.
Inclusive Governance
Mayor Emilagba emphasized inclusiveness across religious and traditional lines. The council celebrated Maulid Nabiyy, Christmas Carol, Odun Agba, Odun Elegba, and Isese Day with uniforms and gifts for residents.
“Though I’m a Muslim, all religious followers voted for me. I promised not to discriminate and that is what we have been doing,” he said.
He also announced plans to sink boreholes across the council area soon.
Tourism and Culture
The Chairman said the management team recently returned from the Osun Osogbo Festival to understudy cultural tourism. He disclosed plans to lead members of the legislature and CDA chairmen on study tours to Switzerland, Kigali, and London, to be coordinated by the Vice Chairman, to attract best practices to Lagos Mainland.
Staff Welfare
In a bid to improve staff welfare, the Chairman said the council procured a new 32-seater staff bus. He added that 822 non-pensionable staff are placed on monthly salary to complement the Federal Government’s welfare initiatives under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Appreciation
Mayor Emilagba appreciated leaders including Hon. Olajide Jimoh, Hon. Olanrewaju Oshun, Dr. Monsuru Owolabi, Dr. Babatunde Ladi, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi and Hon. Iyabo Sola Eletu* for their guidance. He also thanked his two wives for their support.
He noted that all beneficiaries of the medical and empowerment programs are available to speak with the press.
