The Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Ondo Chapter celebrated the 2026 International Women’s Day with a programme focused on compassion, mentorship and empowerment under the theme “Give to Gain.”
In her welcome address, the POWA Chairperson, Alhaja Kehinde Olasunbo Lawal, recognized the presence of the Commissioner of Police CP Adebowale Lawal psc(+), mnips and other senior officers. She noted that International Women’s Day, celebrated globally every 8th of March, provides an opportunity to celebrate women and reflect on their contributions to families and society.
Speaking on the theme “Give to Gain,” she described the celebration as a global initiative of the United Nations and encouraged women to remain supportive of their spouses while embracing compassion and generosity in their homes and communities.
She also announced the new POWA slogan, as declared by the POWA National President, Mrs. Oluwafunmilola Mutiat Disu, which is “United in Strength, Empowered by Impact.” She further disclosed that the Association’s Skill Acquisition Centre is now ready for use.
According to her, the centre will offer training in fashion designing, makeup artistry, kitchen management, and baking, while additional programmes such as soap making and tie-and-dye will also be introduced in due course. She added that the training programmes will be free of charge and open to the children of members, as part of efforts to promote empowerment, self-reliance, and skill development within the POWA community.
Delivering the keynote lecture, the Guest Speaker, CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, said empowering women creates a positive ripple effect in families and communities. She described the theme “Give to Gain” as a call to action, encouraging women to embrace mentorship and knowledge sharing.
She noted that women can mentor others through the words they speak and the knowledge they share.
She also encouraged women to strengthen family relationships by supporting their husbands, seeking medical help for them when necessary, maintaining companionship in marriage and remaining committed to prayers and self-discipline.
The guest speaker further advised women to promote social and economic support within their communities and avoid indifference to the challenges faced by others.
She urged those who have resources and opportunities not to be selfish but to extend help to others, noting that the principle of “Give to Gain” can be applied in everyday life. She also encouraged women to practice self-care and self-love, understand the nature of their husbands’ duties as police officers and provide emotional support rather than emotional pressure.
According to her, women should remain adaptable and become sources of stability within their homes.
In the CP's speech, CP Adebowale Lawal psc(+), mnips, acknowledged the sacrifices and support of police officers’ wives, stating that they are their strength, prayer warriors and wings with which we fly.
He assured the women of the Command’s continued support for POWA and its initiatives. The Commissioner also announced that the POWA canteen facility is now ready for use and advised members to ensure that the items and equipment in the facility are properly maintained to prevent vandalism, after which he formally declared the programme open.
The event served as a platform to reaffirm POWA’s commitment to women’s empowerment, unity and support within the police community.
