President Bola Tinubu has been asked to stop Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State from rubbishing governance by resigning ahead of the end of his tenure to run for senate presidency.
The United Nigeria for Change, which made the call in Ibadan on Monday , said it was unfortunate that a serving governor, who looted state treasury and practically remained absent in his state is nursing an ambition of returning to the senate to become a senate president.
The Forum, which was led by its Chairman, Prof David Ademola , made the call during a press conference on the Asiwaju Wins Again Initiative held in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo state
Ademola , who spoke on behalf of the group, regretted that politicians operated as leaders lacking common sense and wondered how such leaders can give sound judgment
The professor of political science stated that Nigeria was ripe for political leaders that were driven by qualitative political ideology, manifesto, high moral standard, leadership by men and women of proven integrity and good reputation and a clear programme of action that would build the country.
Ademola added , “It is very sad that governors, who have mismanaged their states and looted the states treasury dry, now find retirement space in the National Assembly. How can a governor like Hope Uzodinma who literally abandoned his state and lives comfortably in Abuja be dreaming of becoming senate president. He even want to resign as governor so he can run for senate in 2027 and meet up with senate presidency election. That’s acute desperation and absurdity.
“We can’t continue like this in this country. How can we continue like that when we now have a courageous president that will say ‘no’ to such wasteful thinking and looters of state resources? We urge President Tinubu to reject all his offers as it would be detrimental to the people of the state and Nigerians.
“ Is there a law that says Governors must retire to the senate? . The ideal thing to do is to have a break from political office after being a Governor for eight years. The ones that performed in their states may serve much later again but the already discredited and outrightly incompetent governors should not be thinking of leadership anymore.
Ademola also lauded the 10th senate, arguing that it has performed well and deserves commendation.
He recalled how past executive-legislative conflicts resulted in stalled reforms, delayed budgets, and diminished public trust. In contrast, he highlighted how mutual respect between President Tinubu and the 10th senate led by Senator Akpabio has enabled the timely passage of legislation and effective oversight of reform initiatives aimed at reviving the economy
Ademola called on Nigerians to continue supporting the Tinubu administration, noting that while reform policies may take time to yield results, public patience and legislative backing are critical to long-term success. He expressed confidence that current economic challenges would eventually give way to prosperity.
