The Chairman of SIFAX Group, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, MON, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the revered Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, CFR, who joined his ancestors at the age of 91 after a remarkable 64-year reign.
In a heartfelt message, Dr. Afolabi described the late Awujale as a legendary monarch whose wisdom, courage, and unwavering dedication to the cultural and traditional values of the Yoruba people left an indelible mark on history. According to him, the Awujale was not just a royal father to the Ijebu people, but a national icon who contributed significantly to the evolution of traditional leadership and governance in Nigeria.
“Oba Sikiru Adetona was a beacon of truth, justice, and integrity,” Dr. Afolabi said. “His reign witnessed remarkable progress in Ijebuland, and his voice resonated well beyond the borders of his domain defending the interests of the Yoruba race and shaping critical conversations in our nation. He was bold, fearless, and uncompromising when it came to upholding the truth.”
Dr. Afolabi, who hails from Ijebu and enjoyed a cordial relationship with the late monarch, acknowledged that Oba Adetona’s passing is a significant loss not just to Ijebuland, but to the entire Yoruba nation and Nigeria at large. He also extended his condolences to the royal family, the Ijebu people both at home and abroad, the Ogun State Council of Obas, and fellow traditional rulers across Yorubaland.
“As we mourn his departure, we must also celebrate a life well-lived, a life of impact, honour, and exceptional leadership. His legacy is immortal,” he added.
Dr. Afolabi prayed for eternal rest for the late monarch’s soul and for strength for all those he left behind to carry forward his enduring vision of unity, justice, and cultural pride.
