The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) National Students Council, (Office Of the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Students Engagement) led by Ambassador Timothy Nwachukwu, has emphasized the importance of engaging sign language interpreters in educational institutions to support deaf and hard-of-hearing Students, promote inclusive learning and reduce inequalities in all educational institutions in Nigeria.*
In an engagement with sign language interpreters in Bwari, Abuja, Amb. Nwachukwu emphasized the critical role of sign language interpreters in facilitating learning and reducing educational disparities for students with hearing impairments. "Sign language is not just a mode of communication; it is a fundamental human right for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Hence, it is pivotal that we ensure the active involvement of sign language interpreters in our educational institutions to promote inclusion and actively tackle inequalities that hinder academic success for many Special Students," he stated.
"The presence of sign language interpreters can greatly enhance the learning experience for deaf and hard-of-hearing students as interpreters provide real-time translation of lectures and classroom discussions, allowing the students to fully participate and engage with the curriculum. This support can lead to higher academic achievement, increased confidence, and a reduced sense of isolation", Amb. Nwachukwu said.
Amb. Nwachukwu remarked that "Integrating sign language interpreters into Nigeria's educational system can help break down societal barriers and stereotypes surrounding disabilities. While witnessing the capabilities of students with hearing impairments, other students can better understand and appreciate the value of inclusivity. This exposure can foster a more accepting and supportive environment, ultimately contributing to a more harmonious society".
Statistics reveal a startling learning gap between students with disabilities and their able-bodied peers. Many deaf students in Nigeria have limited access to qualified educators, properly equipped classrooms, and communication aids, leaving them at a significant disadvantage. These systemic challenges undermine SDG 4 targets and jeopardize efforts to meet the broader objectives of Agenda 2030. A holistic engagement of sign language interpreters also supports SDG 10, which focuses on reducing inequalities.
To achieve this goal, the SDGs National Students Council will work closely with the Federal Ministry of Education, State governments, and educational institutions to develop policies, training and certification programs for interpreters, the development of sign language materials, and the creation of accessible learning spaces as equipping deaf students with the resources and services they need to succeed translates into greater educational equity, enhanced social integration, and, ultimately, improved opportunities for upward socio-economic mobility.
