The Lagos State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), has called for uniformity of laws across the States in the Southwest geopolitical zone in order to ensure quick dispensation of justice and development of the zone.
The Commissioner made the call in his address at the quarterly meeting of the Southwest Attorneys-General hosted by Lagos State, adding that uniformity of laws across the States will foster quick development of the Justice System and ensure the protection of the rights of residents.
His words: “We want unanimity in our laws, we want our laws to be predictable as they transverse the length and breadth of the Southwest. This will breed development of the Justice System as well as ensure that wherever you go in the States, you are going to meet the same laws”.
Onigbanjo averred that the forum is holding at a time when Lagos is rising from the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the civil unrest last year, restating the resolve of the administration Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to overcome the challenges and bounce back bigger and stronger.
He, however, sought the cooperation of the Southwest Attorneys-General forum in making uniform reforms of the justice system across the States, stressing that this will make the Justice sector of the Southwest the envy of all other States in Nigeria as well as spur other regions to organise similar forums.
The Ekiti State Attorney-General and Chairman of the Southwest Attorneys-General forum, Mr. Olawale Fapohunda, commended Lagos State for hosting the event, noting that the meeting had focused on critical issues bordering on the justice system in the Southwest as well as proposals for the reform of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 and other pressing legal issues, among others.
He explained that resolutions reached at the end of the forum include setting up a joint response team of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency across the Southwest States in order to ensure coordination, protection of the vulnerable people in the society and assist survivors.
Fapohunda also informed that the forum met with the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) to dialogue on the lingering impasse with Government, strengthening the process of appointment of Judges and Judicial Reforms in the Southwest States.
In a related development, the forum led by its Chairman paid a courtesy visit to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the State House, Marina. The members commended the Governor for ensuring quick dispensation of justice through the various reforms in the sector and urged other State Governors to emulate him.
