State Of The Nation:Methodist Council Of Bishops Urge Federal Government To Take Bold And Intentional Steps Towards Restructuring The Nation



The Methodist Church Nigeria Council of bishops under the leadership of His Eminence, Dr.Samuel Chukwuemeka Kanu Uche,Prelate Methodist Church Nigeria with 81 Bishops in attendance held the 38th Council of Bishops at the Wesley Methodist Cathedral, Calabar from Monday 10th to Monday 17th May 2021 to deliberate on Ecclesiastical matters,National And International Issues.


 The Council after diberations cameout with a communique signed by the Secretary of Conference The Rt.Rev Dr. Micheal Akinwale and the Prelate His Eminence Dr. Chukwuemeka Uche With the theme "Watch And Pray " called on people of God to pray fervently and be vigilant to ensure security of lives and property with the assurance that God will deliver the country from all the challenges militating against her.


 The Council commends the federal government of Nigeria on the timely steps taken to reduce and arrest the scourge of Covid-19 pandemic which could have devastated the land and further urges government to procure more vaccines to save lives, they also encouraged the citizens to get vaccinated.

The Council also urged the federal government to take bold and intentional steps towards restructuring the federal Republic of Nigeria;including consideration of recommendations of the 2014 National Confab.


 The Council went further to urge the inspector General of Police to deploy all Assistant Inspector General of Police and Commissioner of Police to their Zones and States of origin respectively,the government should not mobilize and deploy members of the National Youth Service Corps to volatile States where there is widespread of insecurity and brigands which continue to present existential threat to life and property.

 The council is dismay at the new spate of attacks on police stations especially in the South Eastern part of the country calls on the government to judiciously make use of intelligence to identify and bring all culprits to book which will serve as a deterrent to others.

The council is calling on the government to emplace price control mechanism to protect the populace from the agony of inflation and escalating prices,and also ensure the stability of the Naira and reduce the rise of inflation in the country.

Furthermore,the council reviews the lamentable state of Education and unemployment for graduates of tertiary institutions,and therefore calls on government to include skills Acquisition and Vocational Training in the curriculum, which will guarantee self employment and self sustenance after graduation.

The council lamented on the deplorable state of some Nigerian roads and calls on both state and federal government as a matter of urgency to proffer solutions to this anomaly inorder to stop further loss of lives by ensuring the safety of all road users,also the Health sector,the power generation and distribution should also be improved upon urgently.


The council of bishops finally applauds the 17 Southern Governors for the Resolution on the way forward and prays that President Muhammadu Buhari to passionately consider and address the issues recently raised by the Governors.


The prelate also added that Governor Of Kaduna,Governor Nasir El-Rufai not to  retrench workers,also advice the government to use more intelligence inadressing insecurity in the country.
