The Lagos State Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) organized an expanded stakeholders meeting to discuss the implementation of expansion of voters access to pollingunits.
The stakeholders meetings has in attendance security chiefs,Director of NOA,Director Nysc,Polical party leaders,and religious leaders.
The resident electoral commissioner (INEC) Lagos State Sam Olumekun in his address said the objectives of the exercise include
* Expanding voter access to polling units by converting existing voting points and voting settlement into full polling units and where necessary, relocating new existing ones to places where they are closer to and more accessible to voters.
* Decongest existing polling units by reducing the number of voters per polling unit.
* Address declining voter turnout at elections due to lack of access to pollingunits
He further stated that polling units should not be found in any private compounds,Royal palaces,residences of government officials, political party building, places designated for religious worship or any building to which a voter may under any circumstance be denied access,except as prescribed by a law or regulation.
Some of the political party leaders present said the expansion of polling units is a welcome development.
Director National Orientation Agency Lagos State Waheed Ishola said they are in support of the expansion of pollingunits by Inec.
The commission has then approved the modalities for continous voter registration (CVR) exercise nationwide, the exercise will commence on June 28 2021 for those that just attained the age of 18years and above and persons that have not registered before.
