The Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) has commenced a one-day Mandatory Training/Accreditation Exercise for 110 Professional Bus drivers of Lagos Bus Service Limited (LBSL) for recertification.
The General Manager, Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI), Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu, in her opening remark at the training programme, urged the drivers to adhere to the 3Cs of driving, namely Caution, Concentration and Consideration, which should be entrenched in their daily conduct on the road.
She advised the drivers to see themselves as the only schooled drivers and everyone else as learner drivers, stressing that the training for recertification is to improve their knowledge, awareness and concern for other road users as well as reduce carnage on Lagos roads.
While charging the participants to be focused and participate actively in the programme, she admonished them against unnecessary distractions while driving such as operating mobile phones which could lead to fatal accidents.
In her words, “The Institute has noticed an increase in the rate of people operating their phones while driving, which is very disastrous. In an effort to curb the dreadful attitude among road users, LASDRI will be launching an aggressive Advocacy/Enlightenment Campaign tagged “No phone calls/texting while driving” in due course.
Tiamiyu informed the participants about the urgent need to adhere strictly to COVID-19 safety protocols, noting that the Lagos State Government has warned about the second wave of COVID-19 being deadlier and spreading faster than the first wave in the communities.
She, therefore, advised all the participants to adhere strictly to the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation safety guidelines to curtail the spread of COVID-19 as it relates to public transportation in Lagos, pointing out the need to complement the efforts of the State Ministry of Health, Federal Government and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) by observing physical distancing and wearing of face masks.
The recertification exercise is in compliance with the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute mandate and the State Government Traffic Management and Transportation policy thrust towards curbing unabated road crashes and carnage on Lagos roads.
