Power Outage As National Grid Collapses

Parts of Nigeria were plunged into a total blackout on Sunday as the national grid collapsed again.

The collapse was confirmed by two of the nation’s power distribution companies, Kaduna Electric and Eko Electricity Distribution Company.

On Sunday afternoon, they told their customers that there had been a system collapse on the national grid.

In a tweet, Kaduna Electric said, “We regret to inform you that the loss of power supply in our franchise – Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states – is as a result of the collapse of the national grid. The collapse occurred at about 11:26 am this morning.”

“Supply shall be restored as soon as the grid is back up. We regret all inconveniences,” the disCo added.

EKEDC, in a separate tweet, confirmed the development and said it was working with its partners at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to restore power supply as soon as possible.

“Dear customer, The outage you’re experiencing is due to a system collapse on the National Grid. We are working with our TCN partners to restore supply as soon as possible. Please bear with us,” it tweeted.

The grid, which is being managed by government-owned TCN, has continued to suffer system collapse over the years amid a lack of spinning reserve that is meant to forestall such occurrences.

Sunday’s collapse comes less than one year after the national grid collapsed twice within 24 hours in January 2020.
